Rising Up & Moving On
There are hundreds of young people here in our county, who have been a part of the child protective system over the years. Some have overcome difficult challenges and formidable odds to be successful in their lives. Many have gone on to be supportive, nurturing parents of their own children, even after generations of abuse. Others have gone on to college and good jobs. Some have turned their negative experience into the special empathy of foster parents or adoptive parents. The "Rising Up, Moving On" awards are presented each year to young people like these.
The program works like this. Local recipients are recognized in each county. including one $100 award from the Ohio State Attorney General and awards from local sponsors. Award Winners then compete at the state level with young people from other counties for a $500 scholarship award.
"Rising Up, Moving On" standards are high. Award winners have succeeded in overcoming obstacles or barriers which most children would never face. They also must demonstrate a dream or vision, which they are working towards.
The goals of the program are: to reinforce our young people, especially the importance of their positive attitude, energy and belief in themselves; to raise public awareness of the efforts of these children and to recognize the staff involved, for their contributions.
"It Takes A Community For A Child To Grow." It remains as true today as ever before! We are all aware of the life struggles our children face. We also remember how important it is to have a mentor or advocate in that struggle. Someone we can count on for a pat on the back. Someone we can look up to. Please take an opportunity to recognize and encourage the good works and positive efforts of children and young people in our community. It's an investment in our future!
The "Rising Up, Moving On" program also recognizes adult survivors, birth parents, foster parents, grandparents and other kinship care providers.
