Anger Management & Parenting Classes

Ashtabula County Children Services will again be offering a program of parenting classes.

The classes are usually 11/2 to 2 hours long, every week, for six weeks, although some classes are shorter. The sessions include a class for single and divorced parents and blended families called StepParenting. Also a class for women, teens and teen parents called Choosing Your Partner.

There is a S.T.E.P. Early Childhood, designed for parents of children from birth to six; and a S.T.E.P. (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting), for parents of children 3 to 12 years; a Parenting Children with Severe Emotional Needs for parents of children who have additional diagnosed conditions including Attention-Deficit, Bi-Polar, or Depression. The Love & Logic Class teaches parenting responsibility and setting boundaries for children.

The Anger Management/ Violence Reduction Class is structured to address different age groups and develop ability to control anger and emotions. One anger management class for adults and two classes for youth (9-12yrs) (13-17yrs). In addition to the classes, there are classes for Home Management Skills, Cooperative Parenting after Divorce, and an ongoing support and information group meet bi-weekly called “Parent Support Group.” Grandparents raising grandchildren are invited to attend, as well as grandparents and other relatives who may not have custody, but are the primary caregivers of children.

Many of the courses utilize the “S.T.E.P.” Curriculum or Systematic Training for Effective Parenting. The textbook and class discussion provide parents with hands-on techniques and proven strategies to use with children. The curriculum focuses on improved communication and positive discipline; providing a framework for cooperative and respectful relationships with children. In addition to the parenting text and other resource materials, participants also receive a certificate upon completion of the classes.
